The Significance and Power of Shree Hanuman Chalisa

Shri Hanuman Chalisa is a devotional hymn religiously followed by devotees as the praise of Lord Hanuman. Hanumanji is most revered in Hinduism by devotees and is praised as the Monkey God (vanardevta) as he was born in the Vanara clan to Anjani a cursed Apsara who married the Vanar King Kesari. Hanuman Ji was the lord of Vanar as he was the strongest and blessed among all hence identified as Kapeeshwara. The Hanuman Chalisa Lyrics were written by the renowned Bhakti Poet Tulasidas in the 16th century, part of the Epic Poem ‘Ramcharitramanas’ in the Awadhi language. It consists of 40 verses in the praise of dedicated God hence the name Chalisa.

The first story mentions Tulasidas the 16th century devotional poet being invited by the emperor then Akhbar to write a poem for him but he refused and was imprisoned. It is said, that he wrote this poem during his imprisonment 40 verses each day, and on the 40th day a large group of monkeys surrounded the palace until his release. Another states that Tulasidas was destined to die young and he was a staunch devotee who started writing and reciting Hanuman Chalisa which impressed Bajrangbali Hanuman and he granted Tulasidas a boon for an extended life.
