She instructed him to guard the entrance while she was bathing and when lord shiva returned and was barred from entering a battle ensured between son and father, which resulted in Shiva decapitating the boy’s head.

Upon realizing his mistake Shiva replaced his head with an elephant’s head and revived him naming him Ganesh the leader of Ganas, or Gajanan the boy with Gaj’s head.
